Best pubs in Gothenburg
There are some great pubs in Gothenburg. I’ve chosen places to recommend for their atmosphere, good food and beer (of course). If there’s live music it’s a bonus. But there wouldn’t be any dancing. Oh no, that’s not good pub etiquette. A proper pub, like those below, are places to sit, drink, and fix the world.
Ölrepublican – situated next to Kronhuset, Gothenburg’s second oldest building, Ölrepublican is one of my favourite pubs in the city. The food is very good but the beer, oh the beer, is amazing. Select your next drink from a menu on the table or browse the chalkboard behind the bar. There must be well over 100 beers to choose from and nearly 30 taps. My personal favourite is a Swedish brew, Bedarö Bitter.
Brewers Bar – there are couple of Brewers Bars, owned by a local beer geek and brewer (surprisingly). Here you can order 0.2 l taster glasses to sample a variety of the 14 taps available. Their range of sourdough pizzas are popular and includes several vegan options. Be prepared to stand and share a table with others which, personally, I this is a plus-point.
Tre Små Rum – a basement venue in Vasastan it has outside seating to accompany its three small interior rooms (hence the name!). With 18 taps and fridges full of bottles, the chilled atmosphere and low-key background music make this a great place to meet friends for a good old chat. They even brew small amounts of their own beer on-site.
Haket – this cosy pub has a traditional, dark wood interior and outside seating that gets plenty of sunshine. What it lacks in the number of taps compared to other pubs on this list, it more than makes up for it with an array of bottled beer from Sweden, Europe and the US. You can enjoy live sports here while sipping on a local brew.
Brewdog – Brewdog is a Scottish brewer that opened up pubs in many of the UK’s cities. The Gothenburg pub was (I think) the first to open outside the UK. The beer selection is seriously good, featuring 20-or-so taps of Brewdog beer along with plenty of good Swedish and American beers. I like the small touch of beer tap handles being used in the bathroom sinks; sometimes it’s the small things!
Stage Door – Stage Door is a great pub. Fairly small and sat in a beautiful block of streets. It’s a popular venue with the city’s musicians and actors. Live, impromptu playing can happen if you’re lucky. There is a solid menu of food and drink, but I go here for the mixed crowd and friendly atmosphere.
As another option, maybe you’d like to drink in Gothenburg’s local breweries? Pricey but well worth checking out. Beer geeks will love buying beer you can’t buy anywhere else.
