Breweries in Gothenburg
The claim “made with passion” is over used. But for me, it’s exactly what craft beer stands for. You can visit many craft breweries in Gothenburg. Established in places where the enthusiasm of a bunch of friends has fermented with a deep knowledge of beer to create imaginative new flavours, few will get to experience. Here are four tips on the best craft breweries in Gothenburg to expand your beer horizons:
Spike Brewery
Experimenting in this field since 2016, Spike Brewery quickly became a well-known feature at several bars in Gothenburg. It wasn’t just new beers with witty names; they produce really delicious flavours too! The taproom, the first to open in GBG, is located in Gamlestaden's old slaughterhouse. Open on Friday and Saturday with both indoor and outdoor seating areas. At present, you can enjoy a range of 31 types of beer, most of them vegan and inspired by urban culture and art. The one I liked the most was Mango Fandango, with a hoppy and fruity taste, it’s the kind of beer you crave on a summer evening. There’s also food options available, either from a food truck or the brewery’s kitchen, in both cases, focussing on vegan and vegetarian food.
Vega
This craft beer brewery in Ringön, an industrial riverside area of Gothenburg, has a bunch of tasty beers which combine traditional brewing methods with innovative ideas. As a result, they create hoppy, crisp and refreshing flavours like Vega Azalea Lager, a drink with hints of crispbread, honey and citrus. At the taproom/restaurant, which is open on Friday for lunch, you will find all sorts of smoky products to eat with your beer, from briskets to veggie burgers. Well worth a visit!
Poppels
Taking its name from one of Gothenburg’s great 17th-century brewers, Johan Casparsson Poppelman, a Poppels beer is drunk every 20 seconds. Yet despite its success, it has retained all the passion and heart of an artisan brewers. Located in Jonsered, just outside of Gothenburg, the brewery focuses on the combination of beer and food. Founded in 2012, they’ve been brewing 100% organically on the ecological scale since moving to Jonsered in 2015. They own a fully licensed onsite bar and a restaurant (Poppels Öl & Mat) where the menu consists of large and small beers, food pairings and a shop.
Beerbliotek
As the name suggests, Beerbliotek represents a “beer library”. And to justify that claim, it produces new beers and an incredible pace – around 30–40 every year. Although they have a core range, most will only be brewed once. So savour the taste, it might not be coming back! Located in Majorna, Beerbliotek opens the doors to its tap room every second weekend. It’s also possible to book tasting sessions for private groups or business events.
