Share a bottle at the best wine bars in Gothenburg
There is a good variety of wine bars in Gothenburg, each has its own character, and they all make great places to settle in for an evening. If you haven’t been to Sweden, be warned, wine can be expensive. A little fact for you: drinks are taxed according to alcohol content. So spirits are the most expensive. But, anyway, fewer facts. More wine advice…
Olssons Vin
Located on trendy Tredje Långgatan, Olssons Vin has an enviable wine list. And wine is undoubtedly the main event here. While there is food available: cheeses, cold meats, gourmet pizza, you probably wouldn’t come here for the food.
Wolfgang Vincafé
The “wine cafe”, Wolfgang, is an unpretentious place that you can visit all hours of the day, regardless of whether you want brunch, lunch, after-work or dinner. The idea is that you can have an espresso at the same time as your friend takes a glass of wine. However, there is no doubting that wine is the main pull for this Gothenburg wine bar that features over 20 varieties of wine by the glass with several hundred by the bottle.
Folk
Located on Olof Palmes Plats at Järntorget, Folk is a Gothenburg institution. It’s a theatre with a good-sized bar that serves great vegetarian food. It is also an increasingly popular venue for all sorts of social events including “Drink and Draw”. Be sure to try the natural wines and take the advice of the knowledgeable bar staff. The atmosphere is always welcoming which is perhaps continuing a theme: the name is a nod to the statues in the square outside, which are dedicated to the workers in this traditionally socialist part of the city.
Björns Bar
Opened by Michelin star chef Björn Persson, right beneath his restaurant KOKA, Björns Bar is a highly popular wine bar in Gothenburg. Along with 25 wines to order by the glass, you can enjoy small dishes made from the finest seasonal ingredients. An intimate space, they do not take bookings. So arrive early and have patience, or arrive late and enjoy ordering food well into the early hours! When most of your food options are limited to kebabs, why not treat yourself?
Somm
This restaurant has a good reputation for its food but, you’re very welcome to drop-in if you just fancy a drink. If you’re looking for a “bar feel” Somm might not be what you’re looking for. But with over 30 different wines to enjoy by the glass, you won’t mind too much! It’s quite small, so best to arrive early or late.
Champagnebaren
I love sitting in the courtyard of this champagne bar, it gives me the feeling of being in France (but maybe that’s just me!). Champagnebaren have a wide selection of meats and cheeses, as well as a three-course set menu, to compliment your wine.
Enoteca Maglia
This Italian-inspired restaurant has a delicatessen shop to go with its superb wine menu. Boasting Sweden’s widest range of Italian wine, Enoteca Maglia even has its own wine club. At regular meetings, specially selected wines are introduced and you can even go on trips to Italy to enjoy exclusive tours of vineyards.
Bar La Lune
On Vasa Church street, just behind the Vasakyrkan, is Oskar Ahlvin's latest creation Bar La Lune. Here you can enjoy wines that you may not find anywhere else with the list is constantly updated. The menu is French-inspired consisting of different light dishes. A great relaxed bar with new tasting experiences.
Juan Font
Bringing a little bit of the Basque Country and Pyrenees to Gothenburg, Juan Font is a small and trendy wine bar with a great selection of French and Spanish wines. It is warm, vibrant and the sharing menus are delicious! Expect to be standing at weekends.
