Mabe Fratti is an experimental cellist, singer and composer. She grew up in Guatemala, but moved to Mexico City after falling in love with the city's undergrowth scene. Here she could take the step away from the classical cello repertoire and deeper into improvisational music.
On her two albums, the cello is heard as it paws out in a pizzicatto for a moment, only to soon after lay thick blocks of distorted sounds in layers upon layers. Live Mabe Fratti often performs in trio format which also includes electric guitar and synth - as well as the sound of crickets and other natural sounds. Flamboyant soundscapes grow organically and vibrate during Mabe Fratti's ethereal song.
In Pitchfork, NPR and The Wire, she has received rave reviews, and in The Guardian, her debut Pies Sobre la Tierra was named Global Album of the Month. On the sequel Será Que Ahora Podremos Entendernos? examines themes around language and meaning-making
