Frida Kahlo's self-portrait

  • världkulturmuseet (map)

The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) was active in Mexico during a time when a new definition of the nation's identity was an overarching state project. Frida Kahlo is most famous for many self-portraits, which are often interpreted from biographical perspectives.

Eva Zetterman, associate professor at the Department of Cultural Sciences at the University of Gothenburg, defended her dissertation on Frida Kahlo's imagery. In the lecture, she presents alternative interpretations of the self-portrait based on the artist's contemporary context in Mexico.
